Martin Luther King Jr. Day
On this day the American people are encouraged to focus on "rights" -- civil, personal, human. And while we can rejoice that lynchings and legal racism are pretty much relegated to the bad old past, it seems that the dividing lines have merely shifted. Today's focus, more than Blacks, is Latinos (legal and illegal) gays, the poor, the homeless, the addicted, and the list goes on. While our taxes are siphoned to ostensibly bring "democracy" to Iraq, the American rich get obscenely richer, the American middle class shrinks and the underclass seems foresaken.
What is the positive here? As an articulate young man explained at the All People's Breakfast this morning in San Diego, it is the duty of each of us to have the courage to try to change the world. I firmly believe that sharing the best of our natures with those who need help -- whether next door, in another region or on another continent -- can do more to repair broken systems and restore personal integrity as well as the integrity of the U.S. than all the armored vehicles and helmeted military the government can throw at the problem.
Positively, Carolan
