What a Week This Has Been!

The most exhiliating week, the most thrilling feelings that I've had (out of bed) in a lonnnng time. And, yes, all from MUSIC!

First, an authentic Ghanian drum troop with the most unique underpinning I've ever heard or  seen -- a big curvy silver vase with a microphone inside, struck by the player on its rollover rim with either a heavy silvered fan (for heavy bass emphasis) or slivered bamboo strips (for the effect of brushes). Then an amplified heavy-duty AfroPop group that pulled out all the stops. All this at Tower Afterhours at the Museum of Man in Balboa Park.

And then, as if that weren't enough to warm the heart and soul came Quintero Caballero, a fabulously swinging Latin jazz quintet with players hailing from Cuba, Mexico and right here in San Diego. Percussion that aroused every bone in my body on "The Girl from Ipanema" and other Jobim bossa's. Mellowed out by the most haunting trumpet solo on "My Funny Valentine." Superb entertainment that inspires me to find more evocative posts and music for this ongoing blogcast.

Positively, Carolan
