To Health @ MSNBC:

When are the pundits going to wake up to the fact that Kaiser Permanente is the model of health care that the country should be emulating? As evolved since its invention more than 70 years ago by Henry J. Kaiser together with Dr. Sidney Garfield, its underpinnings of not-for-profit, preventive health care for all comers is not only unusual but should be considered the very best plan and practice of medicine in the country – perhaps in the entire world.

Yes, costs to members have of necessity risen through the years, but costs have bought the latest testing and diagnostic equipment, computerized systems (now an interactive website with health programs, lab results, appointments, prescriptions) as well as training, hiring qualified practitioners who are partners in the organization, and absolutely unequalled patient consideration and care. As my hip replacement surgeon said, “We don’t get rich and we don’t get famous at Kaiser, but we do a lot of good medicine here.”
The only problem is that Kaiser is not available nationwide. It should be.

Positively, Carolan
