January 20, 2009

The chaos that the current administration has wrought in our country makes my blood boil! And reminds me of the Letter to the Editor I wrote on Independence Day, 1966:

It is in our power to bring wisdom and compassion, rather than cunning, hate and greed, into our families, this nation and the entire world. Only an "enlightened citizenry" can conquer the ills that periodically plague our society.

And it hasn't been written about but, as head of every major federal agency the Bush Administration has installed an individual who does NOT believe in the mission of that agency. Consider these examples:
  • The Federal Communications Commission was created to make the airwaves available to ALL Americans, NOT to penalize those who air content that the Administration doesn't approve, as is now happening.
  • The Environmental Protection Agency was created to protect the environment for ALL Americans, NOT to scheme to assist those who desecrate our precious air and water.
  • The Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service were created to protect unspoiled land for ALL Americans, NOT to find ways to slaughter standing timber and push roads, mines, building into pristine wilderness.
I'm from Oregon, where one-third of all the land is Federal Forest. And did you know that
George Bush once proposed giving all federal forest land to the states?!

We can thank our lucky stars he was shot down -- of course the states would have great
difficulty saying "No" to developers, especially in times as tough as they've been recently.

This doesn't even mention the Presidential vetoes, his (wrongly) invoked Executive privilege, illegal wiretapping, torture, offshore gulags, a rigged Supreme Court wantonly abridging our rights. Plus the current $5000 per second cost of the illegal first strike Iraq war. What the Bush Administration is perpetrating is criminal!

As Dwight Eisenhower warned, the military-industrial complex is to be feared. And I would add, the military-industrial complex is to be conquered. For it is we the people that created this country, who believed in freedom, rights of the individual, sanctity of the land, separation of church and state, and separation of the powers of the three branches of government.

And, as always, we individuals make the difference -- whether we are comfortably well off or jobless, whether we hold a Ph D or dropped out of school, whether we are citizens of our neighborhood or citizens of the world, whether we are black, brown or white.

And so where will be on January 20, 2009? No, the mess this country is in will not be cured on Day One. But the person who promises,  "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." must enter the White House with the background/experience/resolve that will be necessary to begin to get us on track toward fulfilling the democratic promise of our country.

That person must be Hillary Clinton. Despite the visceral hate of many in the media (who have received pieces of my mind, believe me), Hillary is the ONLY candidate who has the proverbial snowball's chance in hell of coping -- let alone solving -- the myriad ills that George Bush has foisted upon us.

Positively,
Carolan
