A Damnable Disgrace

I just had to respond to a rather mild-mannered New York Times editorial about Zimbabwe, the landlocked central African country (Rhodesia in British Colonial Days) north of South Africa. The country got its independence in 1980 and ever since has been run into the ground by dictator Robert Mugabe.

"Zimbabwe has been in peril for a very long time and the world has paid no attention.

1. Years ago Mugabe began taking land with crops being raised by farmers and giving it away to people with no interest or knowledge in farming.

2. Mugabe's henchmen made life in the cities so perilous that even professionals feared to go to work.

3. Lack of productivity on all fronts caused scarcity of food and basic necessities, spurring spiraling and eventual fatal inflation.

Through it all, the U.S., the U.N. and the rest of the African continent kept hands off -- as though this were business as usual. What a damnable disgrace!"

At this time opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who won the most votes in the March election, is under protection at the Dutch Embassy in the capital Harare, and says it is too dangerous to proceed with the runoff election Mugabe demands. He is pleading for armed international peacekeepers.

And no less than Archbishop Tutu has demanded: “Step down, Mugabe, for your sake, for Zimbabwe, for Africa

Positively,
