Top Songs Through History

I just came across a fabulous site for music buffs -- someone has actually mined Billboard magazines and come out with an interactive database that will give you the top song for a particular date in every year since 1891. Of course, being Billboard, the associated name is the recording artist, not the composer if another individual. Ah, but there's a job for someone else!

Since today is my birthday, here's the most appealing, intriguing, memorable or surprising pieces for December 27th:

1896 -- A Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight
1900 -- When You Were Sweet Sixteen (George J. Gaskin)
1909 -- Put on Your Old Gray Bonnet (Haydn Quartet)
1911 -- Let Me Call You Sweetheart (Columbia M ale Quartet)
1913 -- Peg O' My Heart (Charles Harrison)
1918 -- I'm Always Chasing Rainbows (Charles Harrison)
1924 -- Somebody Loves Me (Paul Whtieman)
1931 -- Tiger Rag (Mills Brothers)
1932 -- Night and Day (Fred Astaire with Leo Reisman)
The compuser I know -- the incredibly prolific Cole Porter -- can't find his exact number of songs but estimating from a list on the web, it would seem to be at least 750!
1935 -- A Little Bit Independent (Fats Waller)
1940 -- Frenesi (Artie Shaw)
1942 -- White Christmas (Bing Crosby)
1949 -- Mule Train, by San Diegan Frankie Laine)
1951 -- Cry, by Portlander Johnnie Ray
1956 -- Singing the Blues (Guy Mitchell)
1960 -- Are You Lonesone Tonight? (Elvis)
1965 -- The Sounds of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
1968 -- I Heard it Through the Grapevine (Marvin Gaye)
1973 -- Time in a Bottle (Jim Croce)
1985 -- Say You, Say Me (Lionel Richie)
1992 -- I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston)
1999 -- Smooth (Santana, featuring Rob Thomas)
