Anthology Does It Again!

Known for presenting alluring sounds nearly every evening, the classy Anthology has become San Diego's undisputed premier music showcase. A while back I was impressed with world class guitarists celebrating Mundell Lowe's birthday. And on February 4th came a blues show that was nothing short of dazzling!

From my seat near the stage
I felt the intricate interplay of piano, guitar, bass and drums backing each  featured star. And this "Harmonica Blowout" ran the emotional gamut.

Mark Hummel's fast-paced delivery warmed us up and Lee Oskar,
the virtuoso of War's "Low Rider," led  us from a romp to a slink. Then the band took off to the stratosphere for Charlie Musselwhite's signature downhome blues and lightened up for the country folk of Brit John Mayall.

But of course the main reason I was there -- Curtis Salgado, from Portland -- who I first wrote about in '85 and who has recently been through nothing short of a medical miracle.
Now, nominated for 4 National Blues Awards starting with Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year, he's is at last being appreciated on a national level. And we fans know that both voice and harmonica are stronger, surer, better than ever! We even toasted his 55 years as February 4th was his birthday.

As if all this weren't enough, we were treated to
a mind-blowing jam with 5 harmonicats and the 4-piece band pulling out all the stops.

Taste Curtis Salgado's lament "20 Years of BB King" nominated by the Blues Foundation for Song of the Year, from Clean Getaway, nominated for Album of the Year and Soul Blues Album of the Year.

And if you don't yet know Anthology, let me introduce you.

Positively,
