And isn't life strange ...

Not too long ago I was all set to retire to Brazil in a year. Prime reason: much less expensive than San Diego. But then I tried out living in my favorite place, Salvador da Bahia, and discovered it just was not an option. And so it was back to the drawing board.

But I quickly turned a corner, deciding I could indeed retire in San Diego. This after being told that I would be vested in UC San Diego's generous retirement plan in a mere 3 years (since I had worked for 2 years as part of UCSD Temp Services).

Now, I absolutely love my present job -- Admin Specialist, writing/editing/database for 4 fascinating scientific institutes in the field of cognitive science -- and it is as secure as any in these turbulent times. But I am already past the usual retirement age. So when we were encouraged to cut our hours due to deep and continuing budget
problems throughout the UC system, I opted for a 7-hour day. And do I love it!

Oh but then it came to light that NO WAY would I qualify for the big paycheck in 3 years. Noooo, it would take 5 more years to get there -- urgh!

And wouldn't you know that ever since I started working an hour less, every day has been busier and more hectic than I've experienced in my entire year in Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center, Institute for Neural Computation, Center for Research in Language and Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind. (Or
TDLC, INC, CRL and KIBM for short.)

Sigh ...
