First Lady of Song

I had the opportunity to experience "Ella" at the Laguna Playhouse. And what an experience it was! Tina Fabrique seems to actually channel the undisputed First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald. Ms Fabrique has been in this role for some time but she's done so much more: Singing internationally with the Duke Ellington Orchestra; performing on Broadway and in touring company musicals, even acting in shows like Law and Order. In this production there are 23 songs -- I don't know how she does it.

And even though she's not in precisely the same register, she bent notes and reached for both high and low so much like Ella I had tears rolling down my face.
Plus Ella's life story doesn't make for a laugh-fest either.

For me very emotional, especially because I once met Ella -- following a charity event in Portland with the Ellington Band. When I reached to shake Ella's hand, my hand brushed the sleeve of her luxurious mink coat. I've never forgotten the performance or the meeting or the mink ...

Yes, Tina Fabrique did "Flying Home" with all of its luscious scatting intact ...
