No Question They've Still Got It!

I pungled up a sizable wad of hard-earned cash for a loge level seat to see -- and hear! -- the amazing Fleetwood Mac. Their music has been rocketing around my head ever since but due to a hectic time at the office, this is the first opportunity I've had to get it all down in writing ...

I generally am not turned on by old guys -- bands that is -- but as a drum freak since forever who never saw them as young-'uns but have always listened to them on long solo drives -- with maximum bass -- I just HAD to see how the incredible Mick Fleetwood creates some of the heaviest drumming in the world.

The entire band was nothing short of fabulous for a solid two hours. And Mick -- well, I'd always heard the powerful bass, already knew that he uses big mallets (not sticks) on the tom toms, but now I could see the giant Zildjian cymbals and that he makes relentless use of his high-hats. Yes, past 60, he is
STILL one of the most amazing, soul-absorbing drummers ever! Even though there happens to be a young guy out of camera range also wailing away.

As ever, John McVie's unshakable bass underpinned every tune. Unfortunately, he took only a couple solos but one deep amplified heart-stopping moment rumbled through the Sports Arena and literally rocked the floor.

Lindsey Buckingham on the other hand took many wonderful long, nuanced, finger-picked guitar solos that went way beyond the original recordings. They were entrancing, especially coupled with some intriguing intro's explaining the emotions behind the writing and how his original song of alienation now fits his (and our) protest mode.

And Stevie Nicks -- what can I say? She's absolutely ethereal. The voice is pitched a bit lower but still comes across as a total focus on the music, with the look, the tambourine, the movements painting an indelible picture of a true artist creating on all levels.

For me the best was saved for last, when they pulled out all the stops on "Don't Go Away." Listen to the cd version here.
