Health care system conversations

Dr. John M. Clark's  comment in Gail Collins and David Brooks New York Times Convresations on Health Care made me angry.

He said:  Patients Are the Problem -- The enemy in health care reform is not the hospitals or physicians or pharmaceutical companies or even the lawyers, the enemy is “us.” The American public has an enormous appetite for technological and pharmaceutical solutions to health problems and little willingness to modify lifestyles or change unhealthy behavior.

And I wrote back:

I must disagree with the person who says it is us. To say that “we” are the problem — we people in the American public is off the mark! Just the same as the banks/cum brokers/cum multinational corporations imploded due to lack of regulation — so the pharmaceutical industry, media conglomerates and purveyors of FOOD are totally haywire due to lack of regulation!

We the public would not eat excess amounts of sugar, fat and salt or clamor for a drug for everything if the unregulated capitalist forces did not in essence conspire to pitch at us 24 hours of every day on television, in magazines, on the internet, in stores and in oh-so-many restaurants the Glories of it ALL!

I recently told a manager in my local IHOP that I would not be back. Why? Because they turned a simple crepe with orange marmalade on the side into a sloppy mess of ultra-sweetened fruity filling plus cheese plus whipped cream.

I say reign in the purveyors of food and drugs. Take their advertising off tv — no more 1500 calorie burgers in full color. No more little pill for ills you never knew about.

Bill Maher is right — we are being killed by the food and drug industry and it MUST stop!

Positively,
Carolan
