First's and Only's in my life

After many years of interaction on many levels, I have realized that there is one individual uniquely responsible for some very important "first's" and even "only's" in my life. He is an African-American man soon turning 70, nearing retirement for maybe the third time, plus forging ahead with an active business or two, who would likely blush if his name were trumpeted here. So I will just tick off the particulars:
  • The first man who never said, "Who the H___ do you think you are to think you can do THAT?"
  • The man who gave me my first briefcase.
  • The first man who didn't head for the door after a disagreement.
  • The man who was there for me when I was unceremoniously evicted (long story).
  • The only man with so much drive and ambition..
  • The only man who surprised me with a diamond necklace and white roses on a recent birthday.
No, this man and I have never had an official relationship and he's not perfect. In fact, with me in San Diego and him in Portland or traveling, at times his busy schedule and lack of communication have been aggravating. But underneath all is this: Unlike anyone else, this man has cared about me and let me care about him for some 30 years.

I treasure that fact more every day and I hope he enjoys "Alberta Street Blues," a familiar Portland address and an original by Portlander Jim Mesi.
