What I'll miss most ...

I will soon leave the state of California and the city of San Diego to move back to my hometown city of Portland in the state of Oregon. I'm excited and looking forward to the next stage of my life -- semi-retirement.

I also know I will deeply miss friends, co-workers and my rewarding UC San Diego job. But I'll also miss many quirky aspects of my home for 20-plus years. Things like these:
  • The sight of giant jetliners winging upward against the skyline or streaking magnificently along their oh-so-low glide path onto Lindbergh Field.
  • Indeed, the exhilaration of whatever plane I happen to be coming in on gliding so close by Balboa Parks' clock tower that I could almost touch it.
  • The incredible single burger, fries and clientele of Hodad's in Ocean Beach. Plus the OB Pier for its never-ending surf and surfers, the melange of languages to be heard from its patrons, many fishing for tonight's dinner. Not to mention the Pier Cafe's lobster tacos and the walkability of this longest pier in southern Cali.

  • Days in Balboa Park with its ornate buildings, trees, paths, fountains and plethora of museums, especially Museum of Man's "Tower After Hours" with its focus on other cultures and Museum of Natural History's All That Glitters -- the best gem and mineral exhibit ever. Plus the fabulous array of live music every summer at the Organ Pavilion.

  • All the wonderful indie movies enjoyed at the Landmark La Jolla, Hillcrest and Ken theaters.
  • And omg, Anthology, the extraordinary music and dinner venue that has no peer anywhere, not even Portland.
Positively,
Carolan
